Hun taak was niet om een groot fort te behouden, maar om de communicatie tussen Fort Lockhart en Fort Gulistan zo lang mogelijk open te houden. Via heliograafberichten konden officieren de verdediging bijna in realtime volgen, totdat het station uiteindelijk stilviel. Deze documentaire volgt de Slag bij Saragarhi aan de hand van het strategische belang van de Samana Range, het leiderschap van Havildar Ishar Singh en de discipline van de eenentwintig verdedigers. Ze onderzoekt wat door historisch bewijs wordt ondersteund, hoe latere herinnering het verhaal heeft gevormd en waarom elke verdediger de Indian Order of Merit ontving. Film van Honey Trehan met Diljit Dosanjh over activist Jaswant Singh Khalra krijgt nieuwe tegenvaller na korte streamingperiode
Het mensenrechtendrama Satluj is twee dagen na de lancering teruggetrokken van het streamingplatform Zee5 in India. De film, geregisseerd door Honey Trehan en met Diljit Dosanjh in de hoofdrol, vertelt het verhaal van activist Jaswant Singh Khalra en zijn inspanningen om onwettige executies en verdwijningen van Sikhs door de politie in Punjab aan het licht te brengen.
Korte beschikbaarheid eindigt na ongespecificeerde ontwikkelingen
Zee5 maakte de film op 3 juli beschikbaar voordat deze op 5 juli werd verwijderd. Het platform gaf een verklaring uit waarin stond dat Satluj in India voorlopig niet beschikbaar blijft vanwege actuele ontwikkelingen. Het benadrukte de aanhoudende steun voor het project en de toezegging om alle juiste kanalen te benutten om de toegang voor kijkers te herstellen.
In een vervolgbericht op sociale media erkende Zee5 de sterke publieksreactie en bevestigde de pauze. De film blijft buiten India ongehinderd streamen.
Lange weg van vertragingen en certificeringsproblemen
Het project, geproduceerd door Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies samen met MacGuffin Pictures, onderging meerdere titelwijzigingen. Het begon als Ghallughara, werd Punjab ’95 en bereikte het publiek onder de naam Satluj. Certificeringsproblemen ontstonden na indiening bij India’s Central Board of Film Certification eind 2022, met eisen voor aanpassingen en een naamswijziging die het team afwees.
De film werd teruggetrokken van het Toronto International Film Festival voor de geplande wereldpremière in 2023. In 2025 ontbrak nog steeds een officiële certificering. Tijdens een besloten vertoning op Cannes dat jaar beschreef Trehan de druk van centrale overheidsfunctionarissen op de producenten om het project te laten varen.

Verhaal draait om Khalra’s campagne en verdwijning
Het verhaal volgt Khalra’s werk waarbij hij de dood en verdwijning van duizenden Sikhs tussen 1984 en 1994 documenteerde. Hij verdween zelf in september 1995. Zes politieagenten uit Punjab werden later veroordeeld in verband met zijn ontvoering en moord.

MUMBAI: Some films ask you to sit back. Satluj asks you to sit up. Continuing its push for bold, socially relevant storytelling, ZEE5 has premiered Satluj, a true-event-inspired social drama starring Diljit Dosanjh in the lead.
Directed and co-written by Honey Trehan, the film is produced by RSVP Movies and MacGuffin Pictures. The cast also features Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.
Inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, Satluj chronicles one man’s relentless quest to uncover the truth behind thousands of unexplained disappearances during a turbulent period marked by militancy and political violence. The film explores the emotional toll of that pursuit while examining themes of justice, accountability, courage and resilience.
The story follows Jaswant Singh’s decades-long campaign to seek answers for more than 25,000 missing people, highlighting the sacrifices involved in standing up to powerful systems. Rather than presenting a conventional hero, the film focuses on the personal cost of choosing conviction over silence.
Speaking about the platform’s content strategy, ZEE5 business head Tejkarran Singh Bajaj said the service is expanding beyond entertainment by combining premium storytelling with marquee sports properties and culturally resonant programming.
He said the success of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and growing interest in properties such as the Bundesliga have reinforced the platform’s strategy of investing in diverse content across multiple languages. He described Satluj as a film that blends emotional depth with social relevance while reflecting ZEE5’s commitment to stories that inspire meaningful conversations.
Echoing that vision, ZEE5 business head, Hindi Kaveri Das said the platform continues to prioritise stories that are distinctive, culturally relevant and capable of creating lasting impact.
She said Satluj exemplifies that philosophy by presenting a bold and deeply human narrative centred on courage, resilience and the pursuit of justice, adding that the platform is proud to support films that extend beyond conventional entertainment.
For producer Ronnie Screwvala, the project aligns with RSVP’s long-standing focus on meaningful cinema. He said the production house was drawn to the story because of its emotional weight and historical importance, adding that Honey Trehan’s conviction and Diljit Dosanjh’s performance made the film particularly compelling. He also credited ZEE5 for backing a film that addresses difficult subjects with sincerity.
Lead actor Diljit Dosanjh said the opportunity to portray Jaswant Singh Khalra was one of the most meaningful experiences of his career. He explained that the script resonated deeply because it was rooted in the real-life struggles and sacrifices of ordinary people, and said he approached the role with honesty, responsibility and immense respect.
