BORGLOON (RKnieuws.net) - Onbekenden hebben een brandbom gegooid in de gebedstempel van de Sihk-gemeenschap in Hoepertingen (Borgloon). Het projectiel ging door de dubbele beglazing van de inkomdeur en kwam in de hal terecht.

De brandversneller veroorzaakte een hevige brand en een enorme rookontwikkeling. Er vielen geen gewonden.

Over het motief en de daders is er nog geen duidelijkheid. (tb)

Onbekenden hebben in de nacht van donderdag op vrijdag een aanslag met een molotovcocktail gepleegd op de sikhtempel in het Limburgse Hoepertingen (een deelgemeente van Borgloon). Ze gooiden een fles met een brandversneller door de voordeur. Er vielen geen gewonden, maar de schade is groot. De lokale politie onderzoekt de aanslag.

Elk spoor ontbreekt
De priester die in de tempel blijft slapen, hoorde rond middernacht een klap, maar besteedde er verder geen aandacht aan. Zo'n twee uur later merkte hij dat er rook in het gebouw hing. Hij ging op onderzoek uit en ontdekte zo dat er een molotovcocktail door de deur was gegooid.

Van enig motief of daders ontbreekt voorlopig elk spoor. Het gerechtelijk lab van de federale politie verrichtte een sporenonderzoek. Het parket van Tongeren werd ingelicht.

Het Guru Ramdas Sikh Study and Cultural Centrum is de progressieve vleugel van de sikhgemeenschap en vond onderdak in een vroegere feestzaal in de Smisstraat. De feestzaal werd omgevormd tot gebedstempel. (belga/mvdb)

Drie Indiërs veroordeeld voor dragen van kirpan dolk

De Hasseltse rechtbank heeft drie Indiërs veroordeeld tot geldboetes en celstraffen met uitstel omdat ze een kirpan dolk droegen. De rechtbank oordeelde dat de drie geen wettige reden hadden om de dolk te dragen.

In België wordt de kirpan beschouwd als een blank wapen, dat vrij verkrijgbaar is, maar voor het dragen ervan moet de persoon een wettige reden kunnen aantonen. Maar volgens de Sikhgemeenschap heeft de kirpan een symbolische betekenis. Het dragen van zo'n dolk is een van de vijf religieuze vereisten voor een sikh. (belga/bdr)

Meeste Britten willen godsdienst in openbare leven

LONDEN (RKnieuws.net) - De meeste Britten willen dat godsdienst en religieuze waarden een belangrijke rol spelen in het openbare leven. Dat blijkt uit een opiniepeiling in opdracht van de BBC.

63 procent van de ondervraagden is van mening dat de wetgeving zich moet laten inspireren door de traditionele religieuze waarden. Zelfs moslims, hindoes en sikhs stellen dat zij liever leven in een land dat geinspireerd is door christelijke waarden dan in een pure seculiere cultuur. (tb)

Click here to read the text of the legislation introduced in California.  "The Sikh community... should not live in fear of arrest by law enforcement for carrying the kirpan." -Assembly Member Warren Furutani News Coverage of the Proposed Law: Contra Costa Times LA Times Sacramento, CA (February 26, 2009) - A proposed law to mandate kirpan education for California's peace law enforcement officers was introduced by Assembly Member Warren Furutani (D-Long Beach) in the California State Legislature this week. Since November 2008, the Sikh Coalition has been working alongside state lawmakers and law enforcement representatives to draft this legislation. Were it to pass, this would be the first law pertaining specifically to the Sikh kirpan anywhere in the United States. A Kirpan Education Bill The proposed law would require training about the kirpan for every law enforcement officer who has the ability to make an arrest in California. The bill states explicitly, "It is the Legislature's goal to promote education and awareness of the carrying of the kirpan by Sikhs in California." The training would advise officers about "how to recognize and interact with persons carrying a kirpan." A History of Needless Arrests The legislation arose out of the increasing number of Sikhs being arrested for carrying their kirpans. Because Sikhs carry kirpans required by the Rehat Maryada (Sikh Code of Conduct), they can be arrested and charged with violating state or local concealed weapons laws. Such arrests violate Sikhs' rights and are a waste of taxpayers' money. In the past seven years, the Sikh Coalition has successfully resolved over 20 criminal cases involving the carrying of a kirpan. Each time, prosecutors have either agreed not to bring charges or a judge has dismissed the case because they recognized the religious significance of the kirpan.  "The Sikh community, who are a vibrant, peaceful, and law abiding part of our state, should not live in fear of arrest by law enforcement for carrying the kirpan, which is an integral part of their religious faith," said Assembly Member Furutani. "I am pleased to be working with the Sikh Coalition and the law enforcement community to develop a meaningful piece of legislation." IMF December 27, 2007 - The IMF allows a Sikh contractor to carrying his kirpan in its Washington, DC headquarters after the Coalition intervenes.
